Solar Lake Home

This Earth Sheltered, Passive Solar heated home is nestled in a south facing hilltop overlooking Lake Caroline and the Clearwater River Valley. Lake Caroline on the Clearwater chain of Lakes is relatively undeveloped and has no public access, the entire east end of the lake is encompassed by lands owned by the Boy Scouts Council and the DNR. Since the lake is fairly narrow it is best suited to fishing, canoeing and other small boat use. With the constant flow of water through the lake, all common species of fish are present as well as migratory birds, loons, herons, hawks and eagles. This area of semi open woodland is a haven to songbirds and those who enjoy their sight and song. The approx. 2-1/2 acre lot is comprised of lawns, a variety of deciduous and evergreen trees, organic gardens, fruit and nut trees, and natural areas.

The 2 Bedroom, 1-3/4 Bath, house is compact and efficient in design while including large spaces such as the Sunroom-greenhouse and the Workshop–office spaces. Functional simplicity is the theme of this habitat for a future living style where function has as much importance as nostalgia for "historic" design elements.

From the home-site, panoramic views of the undeveloped shoreline of Lake Caroline, and the surrounding fields and woodland make for a very picturesque setting, in the small neighborhood of several homes ¼ mile east of Fairhaven MN. The lot is about 150' wide and 750' in length with the south boundary being the 150' shoreline of Lake Caroline. There is a developed firm boat launching area at the east boundary, adjoining a natural spring fed lagoon with the remainder of shore left to a natural buffer strip. The rest of the lake level is a large lawn bordered by an organic vegetable garden on the west. The north side of the lake level lawn is terraced and planted to perennial flowers. The moderately sloped hillside above has a variety of native trees and some dwarf fruit trees and nut trees. At the top f the hill about 70 feet above the lake is the home site, lawns and kitchen /herb gardens. A gently sloping and winding gravel driveway leads through the back yard and natural area to the entrance on a paved road.

This house was designed to be an integral living structure, where the residents could incorporate and utilize Nature, thereby providing an organic interaction with their home. Foremost of these concerns is light, natural light in particular. With the open design and abundance of glass, light levels are normally equal to or above those of a conventional home . By blocking direct sunlight from entering the house in summer, only indirect sunlight illuminates the interior. In winter months the geometry of the Sun angle changes and low angle light becomes radiant heat energy to be absorbed, stored and released, maintaining its design equilibrium of 68-80 degrees F, year round. The Sunspace may be used as a Greenhouse, Atrium, Conservatory or just a place to bask in the sun on a sub-zero day. The Workshop/Office space above the Garage commands the most spectacular views of the Clearwater River Valley and would provide a home office space immersed in the quiet beauty of Nature.

As well as an esthetic outgrowth of the land, the house is the anchor of the concept of sustainability and healthy living. A system of mowing, mulch and composting complements the needs of the gardens so that an actual recycling system occurs in the most natural and beneficial way. Extensive mulching of vegetable and perennial flower-beds makes minimum maintenance and watering possible. The growing fruits and vegetables is the only sure way of knowing with certainty the quality and safety of produce. The enjoyment of the fruits of this labor goes beyond even the excellent taste and nutrition, giving health and a greater connection to the Earth.

The Homestead is essentially a "low –tech" technology system for gathering and converting solar energy to the essentials of life: food, shelter and warmth. Another benefit is much lower consumption of energy, which translates to conservation of resources and real economic savings -- which increase in value over the lifetime of the investment. Therefore this House and Homestead are designed to last for a very long time and be sustainable, thereby providing true value now as well as for the future.
